Health Diaries: Notes from Nursing School - Preparing for the Interview

Dear Journey Seekers,

As our Health Diaries series continues, we delve into the crucial stage of waiting for the interview. This period can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, but fear not – preparation is the key to confidence.

After submitting the application form, life returned to its usual routine. I resumed my volunteer service, finding joy in the familiar. However, amidst the routine, doubts crept in—was I truly capable of being a nurse? The days blurred into weeks as I awaited a callback. When it finally came, excitement rippled through my family.

As the interview approached, a mix of emotions overwhelmed me. I hadn't practiced extensively, choosing instead to embrace authenticity. Despite my introverted nature, I thrive when tasked.

While waiting for the interview consider the following:

1.Inquire About the Timeline:

  • Reach out to the nursing school administration to ask about the expected timeline for interviews and decision-making. Knowing the schedule can ease your anticipation.

2. Gain Experience:

  • Volunteer or work in a healthcare setting to gain valuable experience. I chose to volunteer at my old infant school, honing qualities like patience that would prove essential in nursing school.

3. Network:

  • Connect with current students or alumni of the nursing program. Their insights and advice can provide valuable perspectives on what to expect.

4. Know the School Location:

  • Ensure you know the exact location of the school. I once knew someone who went to the wrong campus, leading to a frantic call for a time extension for the interview. Learn from such experiences.

5. Prepare for the Interview:

  • Nerves are natural, especially for introverts like myself. Embrace the opportunity to showcase your passion.

On the interview day, I dressed confidently, exuding a sense of assurance. My journey seekers, I explored the art of dressing for success during a job interview, a practice deeply ingrained in Jamaican culture where we embrace the philosophy of dressing to impress. I adhered to this belief, meticulously putting together an outfit that exuded professionalism – a brown skirt, a crisp white blouse, a tasteful matching scarf, stockings, and comfortable shoes. As I walked along the street, I received positive comments, boosting my confidence and reinforcing my sense of readiness.

The anticipation grew, especially as I envisioned my life a few years down the line, envisioning scenarios where I successfully navigated the challenges of being a nurse. However, amid these optimistic musings, a natural sense of contemplation emerged. I couldn't help but ponder the "what ifs" – what if I didn't secure acceptance into the program?

Swiftly, I dismissed any lingering doubts from my mind, redirecting my focus to the imminent journey ahead. As I approached my destination, a realization struck me – I could feel my heart pulsating within my chest. "This is it, this is it," I reassured myself. Stepping into the building, I exchanged brief words with the receptionist before taking a seat. Almost in the blink of an eye, my name was called. Nervously rising, I continually whispered to myself, "Don't mess this up," echoing the encouraging words my mother had shared before my departure: "I am proud of you; you can do it."

The initial intimidation waned after a prayer, and I gradually settled into comfort.

The interview turned out to be a pleasant exchange, marked by smiles from both sides. I wowed them with my genuine enthusiasm. Leaving, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Though the exact questions escape my memory, a few highlights linger:

  • Why do you want to become a nurse?

  • What qualities do you think a good nurse should have?

  • How do you handle stress and pressure?

  • Share a challenging situation you faced and how you overcame it.

Looking back, this journey has been a testament to embracing authenticity and facing challenges head-on.

The interview chapter has concluded, and now begins the extended anticipation for acceptance. Stay tuned for the upcoming series where I divulge the steps I took in readiness for the potential callback.

I Invite you to follow along. Together, we'll navigate the highs and lows of my preparation into nursing school. Stay tuned for the unfolding chapters of Health Diaries: Notes from Nursing School.
